Wat Phanan Choeng was an ancient temple built in 1324, 26 years before Ayutthaya was founded. The temple houses an enormous 19-metre-tall and 14-metre-wide Buddha image, called Luang Pho Tho by Thais, and Sam Pao Kong by Thai-Chinese. The Buddha image is seated in the Subduing Mara attitude. It is the largest brick and stucco gilded Buddha image in the Ayutthaya Period, made in U Thong style image. It is one of the largest, oldest, beautiful and revered Buddha images of Thailand. The statue has been restored and King RamaIV named the statue Phra Puttha Thrai Ratana Nayok after its restoration in 1854 CE.
